ExtractHerb.com was established in 2005 by the founder of Toronto Hemp Company, the Toronto Compassion Centre, Sacred Seed and Kindred Cafe, after we connected and began collaborating with the manufacturer of a fantastic vaporizer (a.k.a. volatizer) called the HerbalAire (www.herbalaire.com). This collaborative partnership has allowed us to help customize, modify and distribute a product that we believe represents the best vaporization value on the market today.
A brief history and background of herbal vaporization:
There have been many products and efforts in the field of herbal vaporization over the years. Even big american cigarette companies have investigated and developed products designed to reduce the harms associated with smoking tobacco through vaporization (see PBS: The Search for a Safer Cigarette).
It is not commonly recognized, but is intuitively obvious, that virtually every act of smoking also involves an element of vaporization - while smoking a pipe, cigarette or joint, for example, some of the herbal material that is not being smoked is actually being vaporized. This occurs as a result of the heat from the burning portion of herb passing through that which is not burning, thereby removing some of the active ingredients of the herbal material and adding them to the stream of smoke. So what you get with traditional smoking methods is a combination of smoke and vapour.
What is Vaporization? - For our intents and purposes, vaporization, which is actually more aptly called Volatization, is the passing of heated air through plant material for the purpose of 'volatizing' a portion of the plant's physiologically active ingredients. This 'vapor' can then be inhaled into one's lungs in order to deliver the active ingredients into the bloodstream for various effects (depending upon the plant being vaporized, among other factors). Vaporization is considered a superior alternative to 'smoking,' which is another method of delivery of plant based ingredients into the human body.
Some of the numerous advantages of vaporization over smoking include: more efficient removal of the desired herb-based chemicals - the higher temperatures and burning of smoking will in many cases destroy or change some of the desired chemicals while proper vaporization utilizes air that is heated to the optimal temperature for efficient release of ingredients; and various health benefits, due to the increased efficiency (and corresponding reduced need for quantity of smoke/vapor inhaled) as well as the avoidance of unwanted chemicals (such as toluene and napthalene) that are found in smoke but not in proper vapor, as well as the reduced heat of vapor-air versus hotter smoke and thus less heat-based damage to the body.
For decades now people who smoke, and companies who manufacture products for smoking, various herbs have been experimenting with different vaporization techniques and technology. One of the original methods, known as the 'hot plate method' involves placing herbal material on top of a surface that is heated, thus releasing a vapor or smoke. This was believed for a long time to be a useful form of vaporization, but recent research has indicated that the hot plate method is actually counter-productive and a very inefficient method of delivery. Many hot plate vaporizers are still on the market, and are still purported to offer health and efficiency benefits, but it is simply not true. The most common such contraptions involve a heating element (which is really a bastardized soldering iron), a glass jar to catch the 'vapor,' and a plastic hose through which to inhale the 'vapor.' Hot plate vaporization is absolutely a waste of time, money and effort.
The second method of vaporization, known as the 'hot air method,' is the way that actually works. Hot air vaporization has been shown to be much more healthy, efficient and effective than smoking for many different types of herbs. Early hot air technique vaporizers often involved the use of a paint-stripping heat gun, often also involving a water-pipe for the purpose of cooling down the often excessively heated 'vapor.' More recently developed vaporization products avoid this excessive heat, and all of the other problems associated with smoking and bad vaporization technique through intelligent design and technology. There are dozens of different hot air method vaporization products available nowadays, from the most simple glass contraptions which use the heat from a lighter or candle (see www.dominizer.com) to the most elaborate and expensive units such as the Volcano by Storz and Bickel of Germany. The Volcano is a truly incredible product, virtually a perfect vaporizer, and is available at Toronto Hemp Company for $675 Canadian.
Not everybody can afford a Volcano. Medicinal herb users (especially) deserve a vaporization unit that's reasonably priced and effective. So we've been testing and improving various vaporizer designs over the past many years, in search of something impressive that's priced somewhere between the Dominizer and the Volcano. We're proud to be able to say that after trying and working with many products that have attempted to fill this void, we've finally found one we can recommend and stand behind - and that's the ExtractHerb, a.k.a. HerbalAire. For around $300 Canadian, this is a hot air vaporizer that uses the most advanced and efficient technology and methodology to deliver a beautiful and adjustable vaporization experience.
